Gobions looked wonderful after the snowfall of Wednesday night 28 January. All schools had a 'Snow Day' on the Thursday and many took the chance to enjoy the woodland.

More than 60 friends of Gobions Woodland Trust gathered at the Brookmans Park Hotel on Saturday night, June 21, 2003, to pay a tribute to Michael Jonas MBE. Michael was recognised in last week’s Queen’s honours list for his 'Services to Nature Conservation in Hertfordshire.' He was the driving force behind the local community’s purchase of Gobions Wood in 1985, which has been enjoyed by the local community ever since.

On Sunday, February 23, 2003, a team of 17 volunteers turned out to plant an avenue of oak, alder and holly in Gobions to mark the millennium. The trees, six oak, four alder and six holly now form an avenue running north to south across the upper Leach Field. The following is a picture gallery of the event. All images have been heavily compressed to assist download speeds.

On Sunday October 27, 2002, winds of up to 80 miles per hour hit the south east of England and swept through Gobions Woodland tearing down many trees and ripping off many branches. These pictures were taken shortly before two volunteers from Gobions Woodland Trust cleared the paths of the debris left behind by the strong winds.

A short survey of flowering plants and shrubs was undertaken in Gobions on April 16, 2002. A walk from the Gobions Open Space car park to Gobions woods recorded 49 species in flower. The study was undertaken as part of a Workers' Educational Association (WEA) class run by Brenda Harold. Gobions Wood is one of the best sites in Hertfordshire for fungi, but because some fungi are poisonous for humans to eat and perhaps also because they seem to appear overnight, they receive a bad press, as do nocturnal animals like bats and badgers. Many fungi thrive on dead wood and, perhaps for this reason, when they appear on living trees it is assumed that they are harmful to the tree, when they are in fact just ‘doing their own thing’ and playing a vital role in the ecosystem.
